Luxury timber cabins

Jason Green of Sprayfoam Eco Team lives surrounded by mountains in the Risca countryside of Twmbarlwm. Twmbarlwm, also known as Twm Barlwm or locally known as “the Twmp”, the Nipple or the Pimple because of the mound that lies at its summit, is a hill situated 2 km to the northeast of Risca in South Wales. It is often mistakenly referred to as a mountain but is actually a hill due to being less than 600m. With pristine natural beauty and a relaxed way of life that celebrates all things local from farm fresh food to area artisans Risca is a tucked away holiday and outdoor sports destination treasured by residents and enthusiasts alike.

Jason and Louise were originally going to build a timber home as an investment project but decided to build 3 luxury holiday cabins on their farm instead. They had been thinking of diversifying and this looked like a good option due to their location.

Jason found Teckwood online and ordered some Composite Cladding and Decking samples. He was impressed with the range, the wood grain effect was of high quality and the colour was an excellent match to our patio doors. It was also important for him to have a thermal conductivity value as he needed to build the walls to comply with regulation standards and he had to provide a U value calculation. This information Teckwood was able to provide unlike others he had investigated. This was a major factor in the decision that he made.

This meant that he could build using 145×50 timber frame, Lapolla closed cell Sprayfoam filled, OSB boarding, membrane, 2×2 battens and Teckwood’s Perennial composite cladding outside. The inside was simply plaster boarded and plastered. Jason is a registered Lapolla installer and had all the calculations done by them. This method gives an I value >0.18W/m2K. This is an impressive score with very economical build costs. Lapolla were impressed as they want to use these cabins as a tester as they had had a lot of interest from companies in South Africa in building these units using this system as it keeps the heat out also and reduces the need for air conditioning. The cabins are super insulated and there’s very low wind and rain noise inside.

Once the decision was made to use Teckwood’s Tudor Black Perennial Composite Cladding for their lovely cosy cabin they naturally turned their eyes to the elevated terrace and garden.

With a south facing aspect garden, they wanted to fully exploit the beautiful views over Machan and Twmbarlwm. With the building of a full width terrace along the side of the cabin Jason and Louise were able to fully utilise the views.

Again they choose Teckwood, the Hallmark Charcoal decking boards were used to make a wrap round decking to the front side and rear of the cabin creating a stunning family friendly area where the log burning Jacuzzi could be sited to give the best views of the stunning countryside.

The luxury timber cabin itself was completed using a 160mm wooden timber frame structure and using foil back plasterboard in the process although it’s not entirely necessary. The cabin walls achieved a U Value of 0.18 in the walls and the calculations were supplied by Kingspan Synthesia.

Jason said “This is a very cost effective option for a new build or an extension to comply with building regulations. The build time is much quicker than traditional block/brick walls and very strong once the foam is applied. It goes off like concrete with an air tight seal”.

More about the luxury timber holiday cabins

Located in Twmbarlwm, it is the perfect holiday location for walkers  and mountain bikers alike, being a stone’s throw away from the famous Cwmcarn Scenic Drive with its challenging downhill bike trails. It is a short drive to Cwmcarn Forest where you can cycle ride around the mountain where you can find some of the best cycle trails and downhill tracks in the country.
The nearest local friendly pub called The Prince of Wales is just one mile away alongside the canal.

Tiny Rebel brewery and bar is a short taxi ride away.
The village of Risca has a wide selection of pubs, great Indian and Italian restaurants just two miles away.

The train station is a 5 minute drive from away with plenty of free parking. You can link straight to Cardiff City centre within 30 minutes.
